Teaching in English – Strategies and Techniques for Clear and Effective Communication
Who is this for?
Teaching in English can prepare our students to work in international environments, in international teams or on international topics. It can also help international students to understand the content of our courses.
If you have already taught in English or are thinking about teaching in English, join us for an exploration of skills and techniques, which will support you and your students in the EMI classroom (English as a Medium of Instruction).
Topics:
- How good should my language skills be to teach in English?
- Starting your first EMI lesson.
- Dealing with the challenges of EMI.
- Language tools to help students to understand and remember the lecture content.
- Helping students to understand key terms in English.
- Interaction strategies.
- What to do when the words are missing.
During the workshop, you will have lots of chance to practice your English skills. Through practical activities, discussion and reflection, we will investigate alternative tools and strategies to make English-language courses successful for the teacher and students.
On day two of the workshop, participants will select an existing element of one of their courses and deliver it in English. With the support of the coaches, participants can adapt the course element to more effectively suit the English-medium classroom. Please think about which element or elements would be suitable for this activity before coming to the workshop e.g. one key idea, one concept, one task.
